How to Start a Daily Yoga Practice (Even If You’re Busy)

Viniyoga Yoga Therapists can design and support you in having a home practice that you love.

Your daily yoga practice doesn’t have to be long to be effective

Most of us get started with yoga in a yoga studio. Class length varies, but it’s not unusual for class to run for 60 or 90 minutes. This format works well for a studio format, but home practice doesn’t need to replicate the arc or the length of a studio class. If you are practicing daily, a short and consistent practice is attainable and effective. Even 10–20 minutes per day can create meaningful change when practiced regularly.

Choose a time of day to begin. Set up the things you need for practice so they are accessible and available. Consider tidying up your practice space. If you have others in your household, you might let them know that your routine will be changing as you try something new.

A simple structure

A sustainable daily practice might include:

  1. 4 or 5 carefully chosen postures or movements to relieve strain and prepare the spine for sitting.

  2. breathing practices to regulate energy and bring the attention inward

  3. a brief period of quiet attention or meditation - connecting with something meaningful

This combination supports both physical and mental well-being and over time can create lasting, impactful change in your life.

Why personalized practice helps

One of the challenges people face is not knowing what to practice. Working with a yoga therapist can help you develop a personalized sequence that fits your body, schedule, and goals. Your yoga therapist also becomes a support and a sounding board as challenges and developments present themselves along the way.

Over time, the practice becomes a reliable support for clarity, steadiness, and resilience. It’s time to attend to your body and work with your energy. It’s a way to shift your attention from the sensory stimulation around you to the information and insight that is available within.
